Coercer doesn't melee

I've been trying to figure out why my coercer is the fail (bring it...) so I loaded up ACT and an Epic dummy and watched him party for a while. The first thing I noticed is that he isn't meleeing.

He is in range.
Melee is turned on.

He's going to town minus melee. That might explain a little but of the dps drop but with his mix of x2/drunderx2/EMx4 gear I know he's capable of more than what he puts out. I was using the generic profile after v15 with a few small tweaks.

But I wanted to see if there was anything else I'm missing before I look at casting order, etc.

And on that note, I just started another epic dummy.

He started with melee and began his casting then a few spells in melee shut off and hasn't turned back on.

Staff, yes.

Wait....I'm I missing something too obvious here? Should I break out the red stapler and the :dunce:

wand equipped?
Ah...I see said the blind man. I equipped the 2h from completing the x2 and left a wand in the ranged slot and same thing. I let the bot go at it and unequipped the wand and it started meleeing again.

So...what am I missing..hmm?

And to further test, I added back a 1h and Sec Wand while leaving the ranged slot empty (typically have a wand item here) and melee works once again.

Therefore,

Melee doesn't work with a wand in the range slot...at least not for me.

bad eq2 logic....

if you have a wand equipped in the ranged slot at any time you will stop melee and start ranged attacks. If I have a priest or caster that needs to melee, I find a different item to put in the ranged slot that is not a wand.

Casting a spell turns on ranged auto if the ranged item is Focused/Ranged.

It's the sole reason my melee priests have "lesser" items in ranged, because the better blue stats on wands don't even come close to the headache of trying to switch to melee all the ******* time.

SoE's at fault here for not allowing some form of "toggle".

Ah, that somewhat makes sense now. I've never played a caster (past 70) over the past 5 years or so and I didn't figure out that it turned on ranged attacks when a wand is equipped until I tried to stop my coercer from attacking the Epic dummy. I backed him off and paused him but he kept firing something.

Since he's a caster I never had the "ranged" icon/key on his hotbars so I've never noticed it before.

that being said, now I have to go check my healers because I'm wondering if they have the same issue, thought my inquis and defiler crank out decent dps in heal stance.

It's not the DPS loss that's an issue on priests but rather that several procs are tied to melee attacks(Rage/Spiritual Leadership on shaman for example).
