I don't have a wife to worry about, but I can justify spending that kind of money because it's a hobby that, outside of that large sum once a year, pays for itself. It actually saves you money if you choose to play instead of going out.
However, if you really can't afford it, you can always try to buy a gifted xpac through steam. It's rare that someone has one for sale, but I managed to get lucky and spent 5k plat on one (still had to buy 5 others)
And screw AoD, unless it ever goes on sale for at least 50% off, I won't buy them for any account outside of the 2 I wanted beastlords for.
Reforging isn't worth 40 dollars Imo.
