Ama .. I'm just curious .. is there a core technical reason you can share (and simply explain) why most of the updates now require a patch to the .exe? Did they move something core into that file which causes the need to patch? Therefore, should we expect that we will rarely get non-patch required updates going forward?

My own personal theory is:

They have stopped supporting all patchers except for the streaming client and are trying to push people towards using the streaming client. If you weren't botting and using the streaming client you would never notice a forced patch cause you would automatically download it if there was one.

Deprecating prior versions helps reduce support costs, but who knows of their motivation.
