IMO, in the grand scheme of things, profiles are pretty minor.
Very recently, I took a friends ranger, for anonymity sake, lets call him JBCasey. He basically was naked. I mean absolutely terrible in every way. BJ, I mean JB had did some training dummy parses. When I got him I loaded a few different range profiles, and none of them made much difference. Maybe a 1-5% gain, (which is definitely within margin of error/crits).
So I dropped a priest and brought in his ranger. Just started giving him any drops I got from zones, and his DPS just kept increasing.
In this case, it was 100% gear related, nothing more.
I find most of us (and to be honest, rightfully so), gear our main DPS before our utility. This means at the start of the gearing process, our main DPS is usually doing acceptable, but our support classes suck.
I'd be willing to bet, if you look at your cb/pot of all your classes, your illy and troub are likely thousands of potency less. THOUSANDS.
Don't get me wrong, it is very possible for someone to make a profile that is just flat broken. Like spamming some low cool down low damage ability, but aside from sabotaging yourself, profiles are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. Most of my profiles haven't changed in a few expansions, other than adding new abilities etc. Partly because I don't have the time to tweak them with the amount I spend coding.
