Windows 8 - Loading this extension instantly crashes EQ2.

On Windows 8 applications (EQ2 being the one I'm most interested in) will instantly crash after issuing the command: extension isxim.

Other extensions like ISXEQ2 don't crash, but the patcher doesn't work for it. (says .NET isn't present even though it is)

I doubt very seriously that I will be supporting Windows 8 any time soon. I haven't read anything to lead me to believe that it has any benefits over windows 7 so I haven't even been thinking about it (especially since I've recently spent money on purchasing Windows 7.) But, we'll see once it's released.

Windows 8 is also still in testing and is not really supposed to be used on 'main' computers or workstations. My understanding of how Microsoft testing works is that they suggest that it be installed on 'testing workstations' only ..not used for any sort of production.

That's changed this time around, instead of releasing it in beta form they released it in 'Customer Preview' form which is more of a 'We think it's finished, maybe you guys can find things wrong with it though.' Which is more like the period of the 6 months after an OS comes for them usually. The developer preview was more like a beta (unfinished UI, etc.)

As for why I want to run it - it has direct benefits to multiboxing EQ2 because of 1 feature - memory combining. That 1 feature is why I'm so eagerly waiting for Windows 8 support. Windows 8 looks for duplicate data in memory, and only stores 1 copy of it thereby opening up space for other data. Say your computer hits a memory limit at 3 clients, with Windows 8, assuming all the clients are in the same zone (same data in memory), the same computer might be able to handle 6 clients without paging out to disk (and having a massive slowdown as running out of physical memory does on Windows 7) because it'll see the same data for multiple programs and combine that data.

Well, you could get me a crash report via windbg or the text file that innerspace provides and I could look into it that way. Also, make sure you're using the very latest version of ISXIM.

Right before I got that crash report I downloaded and ran the ISXIM.exe from this post: http://www.isxgames.com/forums/showthread.php/3829-ISXIM-Instant-Messenger-support-for-InnerSpace

I'll download it direct and copy it right to the extension folder and get a new crash report.

This thread is for ISXIM, not ISXEQ2.

ISXEQ2 works with windows 8, multicharacter has verified that. However, you may have to update it manually since it appears that .NET may not be working with windows 8. (You'll have to bug lax about that.)

The latest isxeq2 is always at http://www.isxgames.com/isxeq2/Extensions/ISXEQ2.dll

Ok, I put a new ISXIM up at the link mentioned before. Check and see if it still crashes.

Theoretically it should tell you that you're using Windows 8 and that none of the .NET things are going to work.

Ok, got the new one put in place and tried running it. It doesn't crash now, but it doesn't run at all. Is the IRC part of it dependent on .NET as well? Now on loading it says:
.NET initialization error (code 3 - E_FAIL)

First time I ran it, it threw up that error and then unloaded itself (extension 'isxim' unloaded). Second time it said "WARNING: You are using Windows 8, therefore......until Innerspace is updated by Lax. Extension 'isxim' loaded." and kept working. A cursory glance of IRC functionality seems to indicate it working (eg it connected to a server and sent a message)

With the new one I get:

ISXIM v<no version info found> is now ready for use.


I then connected to an IRC server, and sent a message successfully. Thank you, Innerspace was the one think holding me back from changing over to Windows 8 completely, and with this working the way it is now it does what I need. BTW Windows 8 DOES seem to run multiple copies of EQ2 with reduced resources used. If I open enough clients that would make Windows 7 get sluggish - they still work fine under Windows 8 without sluggishness.

Yea, things will have to wait on Lax to make .NET stuff run with innerspace on Windows 8.

That first error message is from InnerSpace. The "warning" is from ISXIM. Basically, ISXIM does a version check and, if it's windows 8, it avoids doing a few things that are .NET related.

I could probably get rid of that error from InnerSpace, but as long as it works, then I'm fine. I am amazed, however, that ISXEQ2 was working for you and ISXIM was crashing as they both contain the same code that was doing the actual crashing.
