Checking Internet Connection

Just wondering if there was an easy way to check to see if you can communicate with the internet or more specifically with the Innerspace license server.

My cable modem has been locking up occasionally and until I figure out what's going on I'd like to check my connection before launching a session in my script.

I've searched the Wiki pages and looked at the console commands but I don't see anything obvious (ping?).

Are you sure your it's your cable modem and not your router causing it. I had a router that was acting wacky that would sometimes not talk to the server but go everywhere else. I bought a new router and so far it is fine. It was a Belkin Pre N that acted up replaced it with a Cisco/Linksys Pre N

No it's the modem. I just have to reset the modem to get it working. Resetting the router does nothing. Apparently this model of modem has issues with bit torrent and the packet throttling that comcast does to limit bandwidth. My son's PC seems to be the culprit. I've banned him from bit torrent and things are much better now.
