If I run without patching, Im getting .. client version does not match the server...
trying to use 9/1 exe.

In the release thread:

Users should not patch EverQuest2 until REQUIRED to do so, once this occurs you will wait until you see a new version posted here, and then you will need to download and install ISXEQ2-[version].exe.

How much more clear do I need to be?
