IRC privacy question

Hi, I haven't used IRC in 5+ years (cough cough thanks to the invention of torrents) and have a question about the server you guys hang out on. Does it show the IPs of people who join the channel? Can you /whois users or whatever that command is to see their IPs? If I recall back in the day some IRC servers hid that information but some didn't. I assume CCP must lurk in the channel at least at one time or another so I kind of don't want them to be able to see my IP.

In other words, I saw there is some irc proxy software out there, just wondering if I have to go through the trouble of installing one on my work server or not.
