Sony scanning systems now...

from a message on sony boards:

http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/...ssage.id=114138&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

could someone look at the launchpad app (maybe specifically LP_plugin.exe it runs at launchpad when you accept the EULA if you look at your processes...) and determine what info it sends back to sony (ie.something to be worry about?) it says one day, but states "beginning on...aug 29th"

Yeah, i'm paranoid. so what :)

new portion of the EULA states: (paranoid parts bolded :) )

You expressly permit SOE to upload CPU, operating system, video card, sound card and memory information from your computer to analyze and optimize your Game experience, improve and maintain the Game and/or provide you with customer service.

Well, you have to run it at some point when there is a forced patch - it'll download and install lp_plugin.exe at that time. They claim that agreement actually means they want to upload information ABOUT your CPU, OS, videocard, sound card, memory. Not what's in memory, but rather how much memory you have, what speed it is, etc. They also say everything it reports is anonymous. LP_Plugin only tries to access the internet when you run the patcher, so if they were specifically trying to come after us it'd probably have been made a part of EQ2.exe rather than a part of the launcher.

I don't believe the information is anonymous.....

To take a look in /program files/sony/station/launchpad log, this file was modified today and it had this in it:

[19:09:51] }
[19:09:51] Launching External App: .\\lp_plugin.exe
[19:09:51] Parameters='XXXXXXX|(random numbers and letters)|1|Everquest2'
[19:09:51] GETTING OS VERSION ---------------
[19:09:51] OS Version: Major 5 Minor 1

the XXXXXXX is my account name, and the random numbers and letters are god knows what. (edited out incase thats trackable)

edit: i didn't have IS running at all while doing the patch.. heh

This would actually be a better thread to discuss with Lax over at his InnerSpace forums (or with him directly in IRC).

Memory checkers from within the application are something that the isxeq2 would deal with; however, if something is SCANNING the computer for applications (such as InnerSpace), then it's probably something Lax should know about and/or deal with.

However, that being said, I would imagine it's mostly something just to scare you. And, if it's just being run with the launchpad, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Just don't run anything while you're patching..lol.

If you're worried about what is apparently now in the launchpad, then you simply cannot read.
Here at SOE, we are dedicated to providing our players with a world-class gaming experience. As our player base grows and changes, so do the many variations in system configuration, and we find it necessary to learn more about the systems being used to enjoy SOE products. While the system information already provided on a volunteer basis has been helpful, it presents an incomplete picture of the wide variety of system configurations used to play SOE games.

When EverQuest II and PlanetSide players login beginning on Tuesday, August 29th, SOE will begin collecting data to assemble a more complete picture of the systems currently using the SOE family of products. We will gather some basic hardware information from those systems logging into PlanetSide and EverQuest II, which includes the following;

* Operating system and version
* Processor type and speed
* Total RAM
* Video card type and memory
* Total Hard Drive Capacity.

Launchpad will be used to gather this data when it is initialized to start a gameplay session. There will be no intrusion into your computer nor will any software be installed to monitor your system. The information gathered will be anonymous and not associated with a specific user.

We appreciate your assistance in helping SOE to continue to offer our products to such a varied customer base. Thank you all for being a part of the SOE family.

They're automatically gathering "survey" information about your system, not scanning for hacks (though the license agreement change sounds fun).

Amadeus, if SOE eventually implements a real scanning system in EQ2, you would need to work around it in ISXEQ2, just like ISXEQ does.

So it's safe to use IS to run 3 chars now?
BTW: I have deleted LP_Diagnostics.exe lp_plugin.exe from my computer, and no crash.

Yes, I realize if it's something similar to what is in EQ1 in that that CLIENT itself s checking memory. However, my impression from reading the postings was that it was another application/plugin that was the issue. And, I thought that would be similar to what WoW has, which I thought was handled primarily with InnerSpace.

Soe has NEVER tried to merge anything like servers from different hemispheres without telling anyone before. Nor have they EVER tried to slip a mickey into anything like music without anyone knowing. And they damn sure Have NEVER lied to us or anyone else before because they are a corporation and thier first concern is us the customers and not thier bottom line.

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you ;)
